CONTEST: ARC of STARTERS, TOUCHING THE SURFACE Bookmarks and Blurb Sighting!

Filed under: Apocalypsies, Contests, Touching the Surface

Woo hoo!!! I’ve got stuff to give away. Who wants it???

First, I have an ARC of STARTERS by fellow Apocalypsie Lissa Price

Callie lost her parents when the Spore Wars wiped out everyone between the ages of twenty and sixty. She and her little brother, Tyler, go on the run, living as squatters with their friend Michael and fighting off renegades who would kill them for a cookie. Callie’s only hope is Prime Destinations, a disturbing place in Beverly Hills run by a mysterious figure known as the Old Man.

He hires teens to rent their bodies to Enders—seniors who want to be young again. Callie, desperate for the money that will keep her, Tyler, and Michael alive, agrees to be a donor. But the neurochip they place in Callie’s head malfunctions and she wakes up in the life of her renter, living in her mansion, driving her cars, and going out with a senator’s grandson. It feels almost like a fairy tale, until Callie discovers that her renter intends to do more than party—and that Prime Destinations’ plans are more evil than Callie could ever have imagined. . . .

Kimberly Sabatini’s Review of Starters

I was given the ARC of STARTERS at the New York SCBWI Conference and I can’t tell you what a lucky break that was for me. I am so excited to have gotten an early peek at this debut novel. My only complaint? Now I have to wait, for what is going to seem like forever, until I can read ENDERS and find out what happens after all those cliff hangers? *growls at Lissa Price*

Why do I love this book? Starters has amazing characters, a very unique setting and a super exciting plot. But the best part is that all these wonderful components blend together seamlessly. I felt the very same way when I read CINDER by Marissa Meyer. These books have mastered the art of story telling–they are the complete package. STARTERS reeled me in from the very beginning and thoroughly captured my attention and emotions.

So, what’s special about STARTERS? A lot–but one of my favorite things is Price’s integration of the elderly into her novel. Below the surface of heart-thumping excitement, I found myself pondering some deep and interesting thoughts about Price’s society and how it relates to our own. I love a story that has layers and depth. And I know I mentioned it earlier, but the CLIFF HANGERS are amazing!!! STARTERS is a complete and fulfilling book and it’s teasers are not gratuitous–they are exciting and well thought out. Thank you!!!!

In my humble opinion, this book will be a well deserved success. And making it even sweeter, I love being able to support my fellow Apocalypsies and Lissa Price has just made my job so easy. Congrats, Lissa–I’m expecting great things from you and if you ever want to let me peek at ENDERS–I’m available.

And here is the STARTERS BOOK TRAILER!

Lissa Price is also on TWITTER.

The winner of this contest will also get some swag from me and it will include my new BOOKMARKS!!!!  Want to see how pretty they are? They were created by the talented Jeff Allen Fielder and I loved working with him. I highly recommend him if you’re looking for someone to do your bookmarks.  He’ll absolutely be making postcards for me too!!!

Here’s the front…with room for me to sign it if you’d like. How crazy is that??? Seriously, you’d be the very first person to have me sign anything. I’ll be blushing the whole time that I do it!

And here is the back with a sneak peek at my *heart squishing* blurb by the lovely and talented Daisy Whitney–the author of THE MOCKINGBIRDS and it’s sequel and new release THE RIVALS.

Yes, I get a little mushy every time I read it. *Pulls myself together* But the BIG question is…how can you win all this and maybe even a little piece of chocolate???  Leave a comment below with your contact information included and tell me and Lissa what your favorite kind of swag is? I’m starting to plan my swag bag and I’d like to invest in things that that are really useful and enjoyable to readers. Feel free to get creative.  This contest will run from today (Monday, February 13th) until midnight EST on Friday February 17th. One winner will be picked at random. Good luck and PS…I give good chocolate.

  1. Me! I want to win! Totally excited about your beautiful bookmark!

  2. I love bookmarks, postits and pens (I know thats dorky). Pretty much anything that I could bring to school with me and say to my students, “A real life author sent this!”. And they all go gaga!

    • Amanda–you’re so cute. I do the same thing!!! Book Nerds!!!

  3. My favorite is bookmarks – I really just love them. I also saw someone do little notepads once, and thought that was the coolest idea ever.

Your new bookmarks are GORGEOUS 🙂

    thebookcellar @ wi.rr.com

    • Erica, thrilled you like it!!! I’m a bookmark girl myself!

  4. Kim! Your bookmark is BEAUTIFUL!!!! And I agree. Bookmarks are the best. We all read, right? And they’re perfect for framing . . . . 😉

  5. Did you say chocolate?
Just kidding – kind of. 🙂
Your bookmarks are beautiful, and what a wonderful blurb!
Pens or pencils or notepads are good, too — anything that I can use on a daily basis, and just “happen” to use in front of other people who might ask, “What’s that?” so I can say, “That? Oh, nothing, really – just a novel written by one of my friends.”
Sometimes I also like to “forget” pens at a check-out counter (like at Barnes & Noble), where I know other people will find them.

    • I like your thinking!!! Gonna be loading you up at Shop Talk LOL! And can you say ALPS???

  6. I love all kinds of swag. Bookmarks, magnets, posters, pens etc.

    • Thanks for the feedback, Grace–really appreciate it!

  7. I love giveaways too!! Esp. the ones that are international, lol!
I loved that marker!!! I can’t wait till your book is out!! I REALLY want to read it again!!

    • You are made of awesome and I could never leave you out!!! International Love!!!!

  8. That is a gorgeous bookmark!! For swag I love magnets or pins because I put them on my refrigerator! LOL

    twitter: @marthapao

    • I need to check out the magnets!!!! :o) I do the same thing!

  9. Your bookmarks are so pretty! Honestly, I think bookmarks are my favorite swag. I use them daily, and I like having lots of pretty ones I can share :0)

I’m even more excited to read STARTERS after reading your wonderful review! I can’t wait to get my hands on TOUCHING THE SURFACE later this year!

    sarah(at)thebooklife.com

    • Awww you are so sweet!!! I just have to (((hug))) you!

  10. My favorite kind of swag, by far, has to be book cover posters (because pretty book covers totally deserve to be plastered on our walls), mugs featuring the title and cover art, and pens! Mugs and pens are an awesome idea, especially for those who work in an office. Extra buzz in the work place for fantastic upcoming titles 😉 I actually had a run in with a colleague who noticed my bright yellow “The Way We Fall by Megan Crewe” pen and wondered about the title. She actually ran out to buy it the same day when I pitched the storyline to her.

By the way, your bookmarks are GORGEOUS! I’m a major collector of pretty YA bookmarks!

    venturinhawendy[at]gmail[dot]com

    • Hmmmm mugs in the office–I like that too! How cool is that, you sold a book with a swag pen. You guys have me all excited. And thank you so much for the bookmark love. (((hugs)))

  11. I love bookmark giveaways, cause they help me expand my BM collection!
I’d love to be entered if this is int’l 🙂

  12. Dear Kimberly,

Thank you very much for this opportunity. I’d love to read/win both books, of course! I know yours has been on my TBR pile since Michelle Wolfson recommended it to me on Twitter.

Both stories sound so amazing, and I wish you both much success!

    Can’t wait!!! 😀

    • Awww you are so sweet-thanks so much for all the support!

  13. STARTERS does sound great! And your bookmarks are so cool, too!

    • So when do you get ARC’s??? I want to read your book!!!!!

  14. Bookmarks are useful. I like anything pertaining to writing: notepads, sticky notes, pencils, pens — those types of things :] Ooh. And magnets.
I can’t imagine how awesome it is for you to see your book coming to life! Congrats on your shiny new bookmarks 😀

    aroomwithbooks(at)gmail(dot)com

  15. I love bookmarks, pens, stickers, pins… basically everything I guess! It’s always fun to have something to gloat over other readers about. 🙂

    kspear22[at]gmail[dot]com

    • Ha!!! Yes, a little gloating can be fun, especially when it’s book related. LOL!

  16. Oooh, pretty bookmarks! 🙂 Hmmm…I love bookmarks, pins, stickers, postcards, and wristbands. But especially bookmarks, I collect them. :3
thank you for the giveaway! 😀 <3

    livingsun211[at]yahoo[dot]com

    • I don’t think I realized just how popular bookmarks were until today!!! So glad I got mine early!

  17. Fav swag … hmm .. something I can use like sticky note pads.

  18. I look forward to the book, Starters, as much as yours and your beautifully designed bookmarks! I am not sure of what “swag” means, but I sure enjoy drawing. So i guess my swag would be artsy items, like wristbands, graphite pencils, colored pencils, drawing pads. I don’t know… All i know is that I am in a book club where there are 7 people from the 2,000 at school, and that we need some publicity. So i’ll be like, “Yeah, thas’ right, Kimbelry, a SUPER FAMOUS AUTHOR (emphasize), gave this to me. Haha.

  19. Oh geez, I meant Kimberly.

  20. Oh geez, I meant Kimberly. And oh- your book sounds so interesting!!!!! You should give out necklaces or ooh, posters that say like-this is my fourth life and it ain’t funny!!! That is not so funny the second time…..Or necklaces that say like, or have a picture of a clock.!!!! OOOhhhh i am having so many ideas right now!!

  21. Okay Carla–sounds like you should be on my publicity committee LOL! Love your ideas and you called me SUPER FAMOUS AUTHOR which now makes me want to hug you. <3

    • These are all wonderful dmreas. I’m so glad for you that some are in the process of coming true. Your little girl reminds me of my daughter who was a dancer until her teens and my granddaughter who is one now. Such a joy to see their joy in action. :>)I know what you mean about the first one. That was a dream I let go of years ago. I held onto one by our near-by big lake, but I’m slowly moving toward a life just outside of town on an acre of land with a house that has a studio for me and a man cave for hubby and plenty of room for grandkids and animals. :>) We can get all that for half of what a lake house would cost us and it wouldn’t have all that I just mentioned, esp. the land part. So our dmreas sometimes have to bend to our reality, but that doesn’t mean our joy goes away. It’s just found in something different.

  22. Kim! I’ve been dying to read “Starters” since SCBWI (lucky, lucky you!!!!)

And your bookmarks are as pretty as promised. *glances covetously at the bookmark* As an adult addicted to YA, my favorite swag are pens and bookmarks because I get to have that “stealth” awesomeness, especially at work meetings or conferences.;-)

  23. OMFG…I soo want the book, okkkeey breath breath and finger crossed for this one. BTW your review id amazing and the bookmarks, I’m getting greedy XD

  24. OMFG….I so wanna read the book…breath breath, now finger crossed.BTW your review is just amazing..and the book marks?????super cool. I’m getting greedy XD

  25. so excited for Starters and your bookmarks, both look great! 🙂
My favorite swag is bookmarks and pens. Love pens, something about a giant cup of pens I love them! So dorky, lol.

  26. Bookmarks, stickers, and pins, like the ones that you pin to your shirt or something. I collect them and put them on my bag. :]

  27. I love bookmarks! I’ve seen book-themed notepads, pens, and magnets, which is both cool and useful. I also love the mirrors made for Marissa Meyer’s book Cinder – they were such a neat idea! A little mirror you can carry in your purse or whatever, with an awesome book cover on the back. What’s not to love? :] Thanks for the giveaway!

  28. Favorite swag? Of course, bookmarks! I’m a reader so while turning the pages looking at the bookmarks makes me so happy! That’s why I usually like my bookmarks creative and unique! But Starters looks awesome and so does Touching the Surface! Beautiful boomarks<3
    Thanks for the contest
-Mariam from the book blog MindfulMundanes

    • Thanks for chiming in Mariam–hope you win!!!

  29. I love bags and bookmarks. Somewhere i saw miniature book covers for your key chain. I think that would be great swag as well. I love the cover for Starters and the bookmark is beautiful(which I would love to have signed). Thanks so much for the review and the giveaway.

    • I’m a bit of a bag junkie myself—always looking for the perfect one. I should be a designer LOL!

  30. Hi! I love collecting swag. Seriously. I adore all of it. However, the swag I love to win and use would be super groovy bookmarks, bookcards, mini-bookmarks – all of those I actually use as, you guessed it. Bookmarks! I also really like the neat bracelets (rubber wristbands), note pads, and ink pens. Maybe stickers as well.

I have gotten the most response when I’ve done giveaways with the wristbands, note pads, pens and bookmarks. I hope some of these suggestions help!

Thank you so much for the fabulous giveaway! You guys totally rock my socks off!

    • I see your toes and I’m loving it!!!! Thanks for all the great info!!!

  31. I love bookmarks, stickers, notepad and magnets!

  32. I’m so looking forward for both Starters and Touching the Surface! And I love bookmarks, magnets and pins!
    I hope this is international^^

    • Completely international!!!! I lived in Germany for 4 years!!!! It’s a small word. <3

  33. If the giveaway is not international, I’m just going to answer the question (but if it is, then *awesome*!).

I like all kinds of swags – bookmarks of course, stickers (so I can stick them onto my uni books/notebooks and show off a bit). But little things, customized so that they connect with the book they’re supposed to represent are my favorite. Like small brooch, or necklace, or ring, or a customized letter? Just giving some ideas here, it all depends on the book!

Thanks for the opportunity to win. 🙂

    • International!!! And thank you so much for all the great ideas!!!!!

    • International!!! And thank you so much for all the great ideas!!!!! Hope you win!!!

  34. Oh, and my mail is nashthewitch at gmail 🙂

  35. I have been trying FOREVER to win this book!! If I don’t win, I will either cry or just buy the book when the time comes…. But winning would be nice too xD

    • It was really fabulous–got my fingers crossed for you!

  36. Thanks for the opportunity to win! I’ve been excited about Starters for a few months now. Looks like I’ve got another book to add to my TBR list as well. My favorite swag is bookmarks and stickers.

    • STARTERS was a great read and thank you so much for taking an interest in TOUCHING THE SURFACE–I’m getting really excited about the book getting out there soon. I was a little nervous for awhile, but I’ve been doing a lot of soul searching and I think I’m ready for whatever comes my way. I wrote the best book I could and I’ve got to believe in that. <3

  37. I’ve never received swag, but I have an odd obsession with pens. So that’d be really cool. That bookmark is so nice, Jeff Allen Fielder makes great bookmarks. And I am always looking for a new bookmark! Yeah…I’m not much help but I’m not sure exactly what people give away. I really want this book so thank you for the chance to win it!

    • I’m a pen girl myself. I get really attached to a good pen and then feel a bit lost when i run out of ink or break it LOL! Jeff is amazing and so easy to work with–a real gem! We need to get you some swag!!!! Maybe you’ll be the winner!

  38. I love pens and notepads. Bookmarks and bookplates are great too, especially signed!
Thanks so much for the contest!

  39. OH MY GOSH, I love the cover of Touching the Surface A LOT. I can’t wait to read the book. And starters sounds AMAZING! And for swags, I usually love signed bookmarks, signed bookplates, posters, postcards, even stationaries like pens or notepads. Thank you so much for the giveaway, Kimberly! I am definitely getting Touching the Surface when it’s out! 🙂

    • Celine-thanks so much for your kind words. I’m really proud and excited about TOUCHING THE SURFACE–It gives me shivers to hear someone else be excited to read it! <3

  40. For swag, I love bookmarks! (yours are awesome, I love that there’s that empty space where you can sign them and it won’t cover anything else up! brilliant!) Also, stickers are fun and postcards. I also get intrigued if the swag is something unique that ties in with the book.

Can’t wait to see your book on the shelf and to read it!

  41. Beautiful bookmark. I love bookmarks, postcards and magnets.

  42. Oh gosh, the bookmarks are so lovely! I just want to caress them, haha. And Starters has got to be one of my most anticipated books of the year, if I’m being honest. It sounds like it has so much potential, I really can’t wait to get my hands on it. As for my favorite swag, I’m going to be very original now and say bookmarks since nobody else has. Haha, jokes. Stickers are fun, too. And pens. Oh, who am I kidding? All swag is good swag, baby! Now, about that chocolate…

  43. Thank you for the giveaway! I soooooo want Starters!!!!

    my email : foreverlostinbooks(at)gmail(dot)com

  45. Hi there this is somewhat of off topic but I was wondering
if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML.
I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding experience so I wanted to get advice from someone with experience.
Any help would be enormously appreciated!
