Everything is slower in the Bahamas.
That’s my excuse for getting this blog post up on the late side. I’m still in the vacation mind set I guess.
But sometimes slower is good and sometimes it’s not. For instance, I was in the Dunkin’ Donuts at the airport in Nassau. I was trying to grab a few muffins and a bagel for the kids to munch on while on the plane and the flight was beginning to board. The lady at the register quickly grabbed the muffins and then directed me to the end of the counter for my bagel. It took all my self control not to jump the counter and butter the damn thing for the very sweet and slow moving guy working the toaster. He buttered that bagel like it was the only thing he had to do all day and he was enjoying it. His head nodded slightly to the music in his own mind and he wrapped it carefully and handed it to me with a smile.
Yes, I still wanted to throttle him but…I also wanted to be him. Because sometimes I just don’t want to be rushed. I want to just be…
So not only was I rushing, but I was uptight about being in a rush LOL! And then I realized that sometimes I am on Kim Time. Sure, most of the time, I’m running around like some crazy lunatic. I am a New Yorker and we have special New York DNA that is hard to battle. But sometimes, when left to my own devices, I write the stories as they come to me, I stop and dance to the songs in my own head, I run like I have no where else to be and I live like this is the only moment that I can confidently call my own. And don’t tell anyone…but I enjoy it.
Watching the world go by…
So what do you rush through? And when do you slow down and smell the flowers? What moment to you wish you would have savored? What one did you practically stop time for? Do you rush or do you linger softly?
I try to rush through things like dental appointments. Alas, it never seems to work–time slows down when I’m getting my teeth scraped.
And no matter how I try to prolong the blissful moments (like eating a brownie still warm from the oven), they’re always over in a flash.
Apparently, Time is a contrary so-and-so. 😉
Yeah…I’ve noticed that weird little wrinkle in the time warp!
Chores. Always rushing through chores like grocery shopping, laundry, cooking… GAH!
Ya know it!
Not to be controversial, but I’m all about the love. Time with my lover is NOT to be rushed. We have four kids. Three big ones and one wee little dude. We explained a long time that parents need time to connect. Watch a movie, hug and share with Baby, play the Wii, eat snacks, cook a gourmet meal if you want to. But when that door is closed… Don’t knock on it unless your hair is on fire or someone has stopped breathing. Even then, give your first aid training a try and get friendly with the 9-1-1 operator app on that phone you HAD to have, lol. Mostly kidding about that last part… mostly 😉
We don’t rush meals either. This is family together time. No phone calls. No door bells. No apocalypses. The Good Lord, better use his key, wipe his feet and sit down at his place at the table until dinner is over, by golly!
We do rush, grocery shopping, housework, and the run to the school bus!!!
I think that’s a wonderful mindset to have and extremely funny the way you laid it out. Too stinking cute!
Ooooo I want to be in the Bahamas with you!!! 😀
I’m the person who wants to slow down and smell the flowers and savor things, but in the end, I end up rushing!
LOL about the bagel guy!
I could have fit you in my suitcase!!!! Maybe not…I always overpack!!! LOL!
