Mostly it’s the people standing next to me at a soccer field, a dance recital, a free writing event, a PTA endeavor or a community hoopla that have to hear me bitch about it. But today I decided to take it to the blog. Lucky you. I apologize ahead of time for speaking so loudly, but this one makes me yell…
This Rant is Entitled…Don’t be an Ass!
UNLESS THERE IS GROSS NEGLIGENCE INVOLVED OR DELIBERATE CRUELTY OF SOME KIND. YOU DO NOT GET TO SIT ON THE SIDELINES OF LIFE AND BITCH ABOUT THE WAY SOMONE ELSE VOLUNTEERS!!!! IF YOU DON’T LIKE HOW SOMONE ELSE IS DONATING THEIR TIME AND EFFORT FOR FREE YOU HAVE THREE REASONABLE OPTIONS…
1. YOU MAY BECOME A VOLUNTEER AND DO A “BETTER” JOB. (BE PREPARED BECAUSE SOMEONE IS GOING TO BITCH ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, NO MATTER HOW MUCH OF YOUR HEART AND SOUL AND TIME YOU DONATE.)
2. YOU CAN BITCH, MOAN, WHINE AND COMPLAIN ALL YOU WANT TO IN YOUR HEAD WHERE NO ONE ELSE CAN HEAR YOU.
3. YOU CAN STAY HOME AND WATCH REALITY TV.
As we all crawl out of our winter holes of isolation, I’d like to make a preemptive attempt at saying thank you to all the people who volunteer and make my life better. Your volunteerism usually impacts more than just yourself–it effects your family also. That is so kind of you and your loved ones. You get less sleep, have more stress and your charitable efforts cut into your free time. I know I’m not perfect. Sometimes I think before I speak, but I want you to know that it’s wrong. I know I better. I will remind myself to PUT UP OR SHUT UP!
Please use the comments on this blog to right the karmic balance. Give a shout out to some of the most amazing volunteers you know. And please do your part to stop the madness. Not only should our motto be PUT UP OR SHUT UP, but we shouldn’t stand on the sidelines and allow others to trash those who are stepping up. If speaking up isn’t your thing, you can always use the Jedi Mind trick to gently shame the blabber mouths. Defend the volunteers you must.

Truth be told, volunteers usually end up at the bottom of the totem pole. They are usually the ones who are holding the glue together in any sticky situation. Most of the paid workers are juggling many acts at once. The volunteer will often step in and keep the balance.
I have seen volunteers and low paid staff come to work with enthusiasm to help. Truth be told, they want to be there.
So here is another rant. My experience is with hospital workers. Believe me, the low end of the totem pole can be rough but, they manage to keep faith and peace for the comfort of the patients.
They are amazing, kind souls and what would we do without them????
I would like to thank Kim (you!), Linda, and Nancy for leading meetings and taking time out to help others with their writing (including me!). If you guys hadn’t formed a group in Dutchess / with events in Dutchess, I might be much more in the dark about children’s writing and publishing!
I would also like the thank a “sister” type of a group to SCBWI (I guess you could call it that!),the group Children’s Writers Of The Hudson Valley, including Tracy, Valerie, and Karen, who also all volunteer their time to set up conferences so that others can learn tricks of the writing trade.
I also want to thank my fabulous critique partners who always volunteer to read over my crazy writing and offer wonderful ideas: Angie, Michele, Jesse, and Cassie.

Hallelujah Kimmie!!! A big shout out to my husband Bob!!! Devoted, dedicated, caring, hardworking – just a few of the superlatives to describe his efforts. We’ve learned to find internal gratification in volunteering and helping others because of the external combatants.
Now – we need to come up with a way to get the younger generations involved!
Go Bob!!!! What a fabulous person to celebrate. And you too, Mary <3 And that younger generation MUST be pulled in. They ARE the future.
Kim, as one of those who volunteers, and has since my boys were little (a long time ago; they are all men now!), I can say that there is a lot of satisfaction in volunteering, in helping others or in simply making something good even better. That satisfaction helps (somewhat) to drown out some of the loud-mouthed, nay-saying, gloom and doom, do-nothing complainers and slackers. Wow, do you think I have had that one ready for a while!? There will always be those who are negative, no matter what you do. I personally think that it’s their way of rationalizing why they don’t do anything themselves. Maybe not. Who knows, who cares. It will never change, and neither will the volunteers who keep on doing.
I think you may be right–defection perhaps. But you’ve been and still are such a loving and giving part of my community. Thank you so much for all you do. It wouldn’t be the same without you. <3
Spot on Kim! First, a shout out to my fellow volunteers in the world of youth sports! Second, to ANYONE who recognizes and serves those who need help for any reason. Food insecurity is crushing families, and especially children. Hunger is the silent gorilla in the corner of many classrooms. To the folks who support, run and serve Food Banks, Pantries, Kitchens, etc., a huge thank you!
Thank you and all the soccer fairies who make my kid’s practices and games magically happen. You are all amazing and I can’t thank you enough. And the food!!!! Kids that don’t eat–it breaks my heart. Can we do a soccer food drive one week to help out a local group supporting this?
THANK YOU KIM!!! What a great reminder of how hard people are working— WITHOUT PAY. They are volunteering to do something others were either unable or unwilling to do. It is a hard thing, a thankless thing they do for others. The recipients are usually kids, our kids. Rather than add your “bitch-in” when you don’t like what is going on, people should “pitch-in” and support. Signed, an educator/volunteer coach/volunteer tutor/volunteer mentor/volunteer…you get the idea, lool (laugh out of love!).

YES!!! Big shout out to my son’s LAX team mom, all the PTA peeps, all the peeps @ the church, the lovely Cos Cob Library volunteers! I love you guys! You rock!! For all you non-volunteering big mouths: in my years as a volunteer I’ve noticed it’s always he same handful of people volunteering for EVERYTHING… We’re tired. We’re getting burnt out! For the love of God, take a friggin turn!! Be a room parent, team parent, religion teacher, coach, or sign up to bring something to the next function…ANYTHING. Stop leaving it up to the rest of us. Did I mention we’re tired?? Oh, and if none of this inspires you to volunteer, the least you can do is shut your big mouth. It makes the rest of us want to kick you in the shin. Hard.
LOL! A little gratitude and support goes a long way to fueling the fire of the volunteer brigade. <3

Great post Kim. America has a generous nature and volunteerism and charity makes an enormous difference in the lives of both recipients and donors. I see how the judgement and actions of others can be very supportive OR also extremely hurtful and discouraging. The expression “How can I help” is powerful. So is “thank you for helping.” On the other hand, negativism and criticism destroys the spirit of volunteers. In an effort to do an act of kindness, just BEING kind goes a long way to encouraging future involvement!
