Where have you been???
Oh, wait, it was me that fell down the rabbit hole and got lost? Yeah, I guess it was.
I was busy surviving the end of the school year. I know normal people do this all the time, but let’s face it, I don’t consider myself normal.
I’m a procrastinating, organizationally challenged mom who’s allergic to party planning. I harbor secret guilt about how excited I am the day after birthday parties and graduation events. But I love my people and I’m married to a host with the most, so I try to crawl out of my box when necessary.
But, summer is HERE! RITH NOW!!!! Although you wouldn’t know it much from the weather. WTH humidity and rain???? And I have some things on my agenda for the vacation–besides spending quality time hanging out with my family and being foot loose and fancy free. Here are the BIG ones…
*VACATION!!!! I will be taking an Alaskan Cruise this summer. I am so excited. Major bucket list item. I VOW to pack and prepare ahead of time giving me a stress free lead up to the trip!!! Stop snorting!!!!!
*WRITING!!!! Well, no surprise there–I write all year long. But I’ve got some really great projects that I’m working on and I’d love to finish. And of course I’m off to SCBWI LA at the end of July.
*TIDYING UP!!!! I know I moved into my house a year and a half ago, but some how all the not so fun stuff to unpack and organize got shoved to the side and in the closet and into every available nook and cranny. My goal this summer is to utilize my boys to entertain my dog so I can get my act together. I read THE LIFE-CHANGING MAGIC OF TIDYING UP by Marie Kondo and while not everything resonated with me, I certainly found lots to love and implement. More posts and pictures of my progress over the summer.
*AND BLOG MORE!!!!! Because I’ve missed you. <3
What are your projects, goals and big plans? What’s on your summer agenda?

I’m as sad as the next person about the end of the summer. *scratches head* Then again maybe I’m not. Sure I’m not looking forward to regularly scheduled morning wake ups, making lunches, three kids whining about homework, after school sports and the logical reduction of my ice cream intake. But gosh darn it–the summer makes me feel so unorganized. And that’s saying a lot–I’m pretty scattered on a regular basis. With a 6th grade orientation today and a bunch of other things, it took me until 2:53 in the afternoon to realize–hmmmm it’s Thursday–I kinda have a blog due. (And I only remembered that because I was thinking about posting a Throwback Thursday photo on FB LOL!)
So, here’s your #TBT pic…
This was me back in the late 90’s on top of a tower in Coppenhagen. :o)
And here is my list of reason why–as lovely as it is–SUMMER NEEDS TO BE OVER!
*I need regularly scheduled wake ups and bed times. My body likes it and this year I don’t have to get up super early so I’m doing a happy dance!
*Making lunches–this is a stretch because I have to make three this year instead of two, but I can start catching up on all those grown-up lunches with friends I haven’t seen all summer.
*Kids whining about homework means their brains are engaged. By the end of the summer, it has become obvious that my kids will benefit from the mental stimulation. And so will I!
*Yes, after school sports are a bear, but I’ll get my work done while they are at school and that makes me less resentful about my whole evening feeling like we are running non-stop. And all three boys are on the same schedule and out of school early enough for homework and dinner to theoretically get done ahead of time. I’ll keep you posted on how this works out for real.
*Let’s not kid ourselves–there is NEVER a dip in ice cream consumption. Silly reader.
*Jeans!!!!! I love wearing jeans and a sweater. It’s my outfit of choice with a pair of comfy sneakers or clogs. Happy days are almost here.
*Cool night and breezes. Windows open but snuggled under a down comforter. *sigh*
*Autumn leaves. Can’t wait to see the changes at my new house. Pics to come.
*Publishing is back from vacation and bookishness is in the air. And there are stretches of writing time without feeling guilty about having kids home.
*Running!!!! It’s my favorite time of year to run outside. FAVORITE!
*Stew, soup, and chili–YUMMY!!!! And hot chocolate with whipped cream.
*Trading in my air conditioning for my wood stove. Not a big AC girl unless the humidity forces my hand. But I do love to be warm and toasty.
*The kick off to the year’s best stretch of holidays LOL!
*RAIN–I know it sounds weird, but I love a good rainy day when it’s not a chess pool of hot humidity. *see woodstove and throw in slippers and a cozy blanket.
*The “REAL” new year. I always consider the first day of school my new year. September 3rd is a fresh start for me. <3
*And on time blog posts. Why are you laughing? Okay, if not in the fall–definitely in the winter. Ha!
What’s you’re favorite things about kicking summer to the curb?

Today is the last full day of school for my youngest two boys. I’ll admit it, there have been years when I’ve said, “WHAT???? They are home already??? And for how long??? OMG!!!!” But they’re older now. And while there are still moments where I’d like to tie them to the stop sign on the corner with a FREE BOYS sign pinned to their chests, it’s mostly pretty awesome. Why is it so great? I could make a list including all the fun stuff we do, the mornings we sleep in, the lack of soccer practices and after school activities we have to attend, the absence of homework etc… but it really comes down to unscheduled time. Less rushing, more meandering. And it’s a good thing–the way day dreaming is good for writing.
What’s your favorite thing about summer? What would you do if you weren’t doing the things you have to do? Why does time move so slowly when you’re a kid and so fast when you’re an adult? Why am I overjoyed about not having to pack lunches for a whole summer when I still have to feed the kids lunch anyway? Life’s little mysteries…

I’ve officially entered the summer time warp. Not familiar with the warp? It’s that weird bending in the space-time continuum that happens to me every summer. One minute the summer is stretching on like an endless and vast ocean with no land in sight. The next minute it’s OVER. DONE. And it feels like fall is just around the corner. I know…you’re wondering why this natural phenomena of time passing is being called a time warp. It’s because this jump between endless and over isn’t linear. I bounce back and forth between the two over and over again. Here are some examples…
*FAST! When planning ahead to do weekend get togethers with friends and family–I find myself saying, “I’m sorry, but we’re already booked into November. *head thunk*
*S-L-O-W When I’m trying to write and the three boys are staring at me and saying they are bored.
*FAST! When I think about how much time I need to clean my house, do my last year’s fall yard clean-up in addition to this year’s spring clean-up while getting a jump on the coming fall clean up.
*S-L-O-W When I’m waiting for my garden to produce tomatoes. *yum*
*FAST! When I think about all the things I have to do to get ready for a book launch.
*S-L-O-W When I think about the moment I can hold my book in my hand for the first time.
*FAST! When I’m eating an ice cream cone.
*S-L-O-W When I’m eating healthy and trying to get in shape.
*FAST! When I’m on my family vacation. (I already know it’s going to fly by *sob*)
*S-L-O-W When I’m packing and unpacking.
I think you get the idea LOL! It’s the summer TIME WARP!!! Are you a victim of the warp??? What’s your fast and best parts of your summer? What’s your slow and yucky parts?
