2am Dedication

January 1, 2012 | Uncategorized

As of 2am New Year’s Day it’s been seven years since I lost my dad and I found myself.  This ones for you Daddy…

Breathe 2am

There’s a light at each end of this tunnel, you shout
But you’re just as far in as you’ll ever be out
These mistakes you’ve made, you’ll just make them again
If you only try turning around.

2 AM and I’m still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, its no longer
inside of me, threatening the life it belongs to
And i feel like I’m naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you’ll use them, however you want to

Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable,
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
and breathe, just breathe
woah breathe, just breathe,
oh breathe, just breathe.

Love and miss you…always and forever.

2012 Brings Lots of Excitement: First Pass Pages, Website, YAmazing Race, NY SCBWI

December 30, 2011 | , ,

The next time I write a blog post it will be 2012!!!!  I have to say, I don’t think I’ve ever looked forward to New Year’s Eve quite as much as I am this year.  I know it’s silly, but dipping a toe into 2012 feels like hitting another big milestone.  TOUCHING THE SURFACE is roughly 9 months away!!!

I’ve had three kids…I know what kinds of things can happen in a 9 month period. LOL!

So what are some of the things happening in the new year?  Well, first off–I have my first pass pages!!!  (Yes, I’m aware of my spastic over use of the exclamation point–it can’t be helped.)  If you’re not familiar, first pass pages are large sheets of paper that have my book laid out the way it will look when it’s really printed into a book.  Do you want a sneak peek?

This is the equivalent of two pages of text from the book.  Since I got them right before the hectic holidays, I’ve been hanging on to them until the kids are all back in school and the house is nice and quiet. It’s been awhile since I’ve read my book cover to cover, so I’m really excited to curl up with it again.  It’s also the last time that I get a chance to make any changes. *shivers* I’ve been fiddling with this baby for so long its a little scary to think that it’s finally time to send it out into the world.  I have butterflies of the very best kind.
More good news to watch for.  Next week will be the launch of my website!!!  Maybe I’m biased, but I think it’s gorgeous.  Do you want a sneak peek of that too?  Okay…here it is…
Yes, my blog will be moving to the new website on Word Press.  The old blog will be set up to redirect you to the new location, so hopefully no one will be lost in cyber space.  Of course I’ll let you know the minute the website is live, but just so you know, you’ll be able to find me at www.kimberlysabatini.com.
Additionally, I’d like to tip you off to something fun that I’ll be participating in. Do you watch the Amazing Race?  Well, on January 13th and 14th, I’ll be participating in the first Apocalypsie YAmazing Race!  An internet race around the blogosphere.  It’s going to be lots of fun and there will be really cool prizes–so keep those dates on your calendar.
Lastly, at the end of the month I’ll be heading to the NY SCBWI Winter Conference.  Or as we call it in my house–Daddy Party Weekend!!!  I’m very pumped because I’m reuniting with old friends, meeting some on-line friends for the first time and I’m also taking the Friday Marketing Intensive.  Lots of exciting stuff!  And of course, I promise to take lots of pictures to share with you.  :o)
So now you’ve heard all about some of the things I’m excited for in 2012–what are you looking forward to in the new year?  Come on, spill.

My Kind of LapDawg

December 28, 2011 | , ,

I love to share the nifty gadgets that I stumble upon and I’ve got a great new one–straight from under the Christmas tree.  I’ve been looking for the perfect lap desk for quite a while now. I find myself writing on my bed or in a big oversized chair more and more now that my hamstrings are so sore from running and dancing.  I’ve also hypothetically wanted a dog.  I stress the HYPOTHETICALLY part.  I want the neighbor’s dog to come over and visit when I’m in the mood, but then I want to to be able to send her back across the way for someone else to take care of.  Yeah, I’m not kidding.

My compromise…

The LapDawgx4!!!!

Okay…it really has nothing to do with dogs except the name, but as a lap desk it rocks!!!  It’s so perfect, I keep forgetting about ever wanting that dog.  Check it out…

What holiday gift did you get that I should know about?

Sneaky Monday

December 26, 2011 | ,

Sneaky, sneaky Monday. I was just ready to settle down for a long winter’s nap and BAM!!!! I realized tomorrow is Monday–aka blogpost day. *head thunk* And not that I don’t love my blog, but seriously I’m in a food coma right now and my lap top did that same thing it did a couple weeks ago and it just shut down Grrrrr. Yes, I’ll be hitting the Genius Bar at the Apple store ASAP! So why am I still in such a jolly mood? Well, I had a great Christmas and I’m still able to get this blog post out to you on my iPad!!!! Yeah, I’m in love. I had no idea how much I was going to enjoy this little baby. Think I’m going to have to name this little guy George. Unless you have a better name. :o)So, to celebrate sneaky Monday…tell me what was your favorite gift of the Holiday season.

The Magic of the Imperfect Ending

December 23, 2011 | , ,

I know I’ve mentioned this before, but the Gift of the Magi was a Christmas story that fascinated me from an early age.  I can remember thinking that if I ever wrote stories, I would want them to illicit the same kind of emotional response that the Gift of the Magi did. I didn’t say it in quite those words, but what I knew was that it gave me the same feeling I’d get when I was tickled by my dad–I wanted it to stop AND never end at the same time.

I crave being smack in the middle of an ending that is both emotionally rich and mind bogglingly complicated at the same time.  I want it in life and I want it in my stories.  Even when I was younger I think I sensed that my world could never be flat–it must have it’s ups and downs.  It made me want to have flow–the ability to understand that everything is about perception.  I have my moments of desperation and frustration, but what drives me is my need to be endlessly surprised by our capacity to exceed our own expectations.

Here’s another Christmas gift that gets me every time.  This one tugs at my heart strings even more than the Magi because it reinforces how I feel about kids–they are constantly underestimated.  If I watch them closely enough, they teach me everything I need to know.  It’s why I write for them.  They are the smartest audience out there.

What story or movie ending do you find perfectly imperfect?
